Work by John Gentry

Some of my best pieces of work:

This is a project I worked together with in History class,

Greek Scavenger Hunt

1.                  Find a youtube video that explains the relationship between Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. What is your reaction to that video? How does it make you feel?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLDOn8HTJpE
They are all using a formal method to study science. This video makes us feel that it was easy to invent such work and this video easily shows the relationships between Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. However to my understanding it took years to complete their studies and work.

2.                  What was the great achievement of Aristotle – How does he compare with Socrates and Plato? Find a visual representation of Aristotle on the Internet. Try and recreate that image.

Aristotle is considered the “founder” of formal logic, Aristotle ‘s most valuable contribution to philosophy was his emphasis on reason and logic. He invented a new philosophy called “observational science”. Aristotle believed that the earth was located at the center of the universe, he said the universe was composed of four elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
Socrates and Plato mostly studied human behavior, and Aristotle was more concerned about the nature of the world around him.

3.                  Learn about one aspect of Homer's epic the Odyssey. Be ready to share the story with the class – cannot read it – There are many small tales that are part of the Odyssey – find one good one! Use the Internet. Read the story and write a synopsis of it here:
http://greece.mrdonn.org/odyssey.html
The Cyclops Cave: Odysseus and and his men has been on the sea for a while, and their supplies began to dwindle, so they landed on shore to look for foods. They found a cave that fulls of sheeps, and they cooked those sheeps, but the sheeps belong to the Cyclops-- a giant with only one eye. When the Cyclops return to the cave, he was very angry, he locked Odysseus and his men in the cave. Odysseus used a trick, and managed to let the Cyclops drunk, he sharpened a stick and blinded the Cyclops. The Cyclops wanted to find and ate them, but Odysseus and his men crawled under the sheeps and made the sound of the sheeps. They safely out of the cage and went away.

4.                  Why are Greeks known as great historians? Who were these people? - Use your textbook pg. 145
The Greeks are known as great historians because of their language and also because Greeks were one of the first people to write about and analyse their own past. Herodotus for example described wars with Persia in detail.  Thucydides described speeches that people said during that time. Unlike Herodotus, Thucydides did not care about what people said about him.

5.                  Find 5 pictures online of Greek architecture and art – Copy and paste the pictures here and then give a description of each!
Picture
Description
Greek Temple: The Parthenon, shows the common structural features of Ancient Greek architecture: crepidoma, columns, entablature, and pediment.
This is a 2nd century BC Hellenistic relief bowl
In the middle of the bowl you will see a head. This is the head of maenad, a dancer in greek mythology.
*Black figure Amphora, Atalante painter (500-490 BC), shows proportion and style that are hallmarks of Ancient Greek art.
*The Temple of Aphaia: the hypostyle columns rise in two tiers, to a height greater than the walls, to support a roof without struts.
This type of pottery is called a “Corinthian orientalising jug” This was made in 620 BC and can be found in the “Staatliche Antikensammlungen” museum.

6. Greek drama included comedies and tragedies. Hubris a disregard for the limits that the gods had placed on people, was a key element of the tragedies. A character cursed with hubris offended the gods and suffered as a result. In contrast, the comedies were hilarious, sometimes crude, observations on human shortcomings. Find a youtube video that depicts Greek Drama and watch it. What does it tell you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n7I9aFmAcE
This video tell us about the tragedy, comedy, and satyr plays. This video talks more about the tragedy. Tragedy means “Goat Song” in Ancient Greek language, and Aristotle said tragedy means an imitation of an action that is whole and complete and is a certain magnitude. The Tragic Hero is a man who is eminently good, and is from a rank of nobility. Oedipus Rex is an example of the Ancient Greek Tragedy.

How to oppress - Jewish Oppression By John Gentry

You need to outnumber them in army to even think about oppressing them. You need to have an army before even considering oppressing the jewish community. The jews were oppressed by the germans and in result Oskar Schindler felt the need to free the jews. He used all of his money to save as many jews as he could. He frees a lot of jews and saved 1,000s.

The germans used the prejudice against the Jews at the time to attack. In this way he succeeded and oppressed the jews, however he took it to far and ended up having other nations becoming involved.

The germans also blamed allot of crimes on the jews. Doing so, caused jews to move away from germany and then could have started the war between jerusalem. (In my opinion)
